26 March 2010 • Dragonfly Wars Moving

I've created an actual blog site for this; read and comment here.

13 March 2010 • Dragonfly Wars, Chapter 2

I have an active imagination. I make up things about myself while I'm driving.

7 March 2010 • Dragonfly Wars, Chapter 1

I used to be afraid of dragonflies. I thought they were like bees. Come to find out, they're gentle, beneficial beings. Then, come to find out, so are bees! They only sting if you ask them to. Well, that sounds a little wrong, like blame the victim, but I'll leave it for now.

I also used to be afraid of spiders. Oooh, so scared I couldn't sleep in the same room with one. Now, I think they are awesome. So many varieties! My favorite spider, I think, has to be the orb weaver, especially the orange spiny one I had living out on my back patio for a year or so. Amazing. I called her "good Charlotte" — not after the spider in Charlotte's Web, but after the band. My current favorite picture on the Web is an extreme closeup of a wolf spider carrying hundreds of babies on her back. For lack of energy to find a better phrase, I'll just say it's way awesome.

I also used to be afraid of people. Come to find out, I'm an extrovert. Love public speaking. Haven't found anyone I can't talk to about something. I like that. And, I mean, maaann, I have met some PEOPLE. All kinds.

That's where I'll leave this for now. Come back to find out more!

20 December 2009

Finally got my Web site ftp working again, so I can now make updates! Now I really need to start thinking seriously about what I might say and how I want to use this space. I also need to learn more about HTML and CSS so that I can adjust the look of this page.

Now, the question is, should I make this a real blog with room for comments, or just a place for my thoughts that I can direct people to from Twitter and facebook? I think the latter. I don't want to risk having lots of negative comments from people I don't know. Somehow, that tends to really break my heart in a way that not much else does.

So, look here later this week for my first serious attempt at a composed blog.

21 October 2009

At the GSA Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon, USA, this week. Lots of posts on Twitter and facebook. May try to compile them here. Main note is how nice it's been for me, how beautiful the hotel room was, and the view from its balcony of REAL trees.

24 August 2009

I hereby claim the title "The Dragonfly Wars" for an upcoming book. More to come.

My Writing

When I was teaching at Front Range Community College, I developed a few essays as examples for my students.

Here's a poem I wrote about my relationship with my boyfriend, who has Asperger's Syndrome:

Bear

Orange tulips, purple irises—
These are the tokens he sends me
Though I almost beg him to say
He loves me
All I know is his hand on my shoulder
When I call out “No!” in a dream,
His arm pulling me close,
His gentle voice.
Though I want him to tell me
He loves me
All I know is his stable presence
His eyes of kindness
The trickster who makes me laugh.
Though I pester him to hear
I want you, I love you — any words that confirm
He values me
All I know is that he knows me,
Sees me, feels me, listens,
Smiles when I come home,
Holds my hand.
I want to hear words, but instead I hear
His steady breathing
And feel the rise and fall of his chest
As I rest my head against his body,
The slow rhythm lulling me to sleep.
